Overview
Registered in 2014, *Hosta* 'Virginia Reel' is a small, mound-forming cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'Crepe Suzette'* and *H. 'Riptide'*. Its most distinctive feature is a low, pinwheel-like rosette of lance-shaped, blue-green leaves edged with pale yellow margins, the foliage further characterized by a glaucous bloom on both surfaces.
In the Garden
'Virginia Reel' reaches a mature diameter of 18 inches (45.7 cm) and a height of 9 inches (22.9 cm), forming a compact, moderate-growing mound. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its small stature makes it well-suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants that provide contrasting textures or colors, such as ferns or small-leaved perennials, complement its variegated foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor foliage regularly and employ control measures if needed.
