Overview
Registered in 1990 by W. & E. Lachman, this small hosta cultivar arose from a self-pollination of *Hosta* 'Flamboyant'. 'Verna Jean' is distinguished by its light lime green leaves with ivory, undulated margins, a compact mound form, and a total diameter of 16 inches (40.6 cm) at a height of 8 inches (20.3 cm).
In the Garden
'Verna Jean' performs best in partial to full shade, where its variegated foliage maintains color without scorching. At maturity, it forms a low, rounded clump suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Its small stature pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials of similar scale.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage; routine monitoring and protective measures are advisable in typical hosta-growing zones.
