Overview

Registered in 1993 as a sport of an unidentified parent, *Hosta* 'Venus' is a large, variegated cultivar distinguished by its smooth, cordate leaves with medium green margins and very shiny surfaces on both sides. The leaf blades reach 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) in length and 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) in width, with 10 to 11 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a substantial clump, maturing to 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height, with green scapes rising to 28 inches (71.1 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, where its glossy foliage is less prone to scorching. Suitable companions include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size makes it appropriate for mid-border or specimen placement.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like many hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
