Overview
Registered in 1986 by A. Summers and the American Hosta Society, 'Venucosa' is a medium-sized hybrid resulting from a cross between *H. venusta* (pod parent) and *H. ventricosa* (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually distinguished by its variegated foliage, which features medium green leaves with slight undulating margins and eight pairs of veins.
In the Garden
'Venucosa' reaches a mature spread of approximately 55 inches (139.7 cm) and a height of 20 inches (50.8 cm), with scapes extending up to 36 inches (91.4 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is suitable for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or as a groundcover in moderate-sized areas. Its medium stature and variegated leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Venucosa' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
