Overview

Registered in 2011 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Neon Glory', 'Velvet Shadows' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its intensely blue-green leaf centers with medium green, slightly rippled margins and a heavily pebbled (corrugated) surface. The leaf blades are ovate with cordate bases, measure 9 inches (22.9 cm) long by 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) wide, and bear 11 vein pairs; the upper surface is dull, while the underside displays a glaucous bloom.

In the Garden

'Velvet Shadows' forms an upright clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 35 inches (88.9 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous bloom and deep corrugation are most pronounced. The medium green leaf margins, ranging from 0.5 to 1 inch (1.3 to 2.5 cm) wide, provide subtle contrast; companion plants with fine-textured foliage or pale flowers complement its bold leaf surface.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Velvet Shadows' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, particularly on new foliage.
