Overview

Registered in 2009, *Hosta* 'Valley's Tonkatsu' is a small-sized variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'Goldbrook Grebe'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Katsuragawa Beni'* (pollen parent). Its most distinctive visual feature is the combination of medium green leaves with heavily rippled, wavy margins, a trait that gives the foliage a notably textured appearance.

In the Garden

'Valley's Tonkatsu' forms a compact, fast-growing mound reaching approximately 14 inches (35 cm) in height and 20 inches (50 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its small stature makes it well suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials complement its low, mounding habit.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
