Overview
Registered in 2008 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Red October', 'Valley's Sushi' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with white margins and dark purplish red petioles that bleed into the leaf blade. The ovate leaves, measuring 8.3 inches (21.1 cm) long and 3.9 inches (9.9 cm) wide, feature five vein pairs and a slightly shiny upper surface with a glaucous bloom beneath.
In the Garden
'Valley's Sushi' forms an upright, open mound reaching 23.6 inches (59.9 cm) in height and 11.8 inches (30.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the white margins remain distinct and the blue-green centers hold their color. The dark red scapes, which rise 7.9 to 19.7 inches (20.1 to 50.0 cm) above the foliage, and the red-bleeding petioles provide additional interest; companion plants with contrasting foliage colors, such as golden or chartreuse hostas, can complement this cultivar.
Care Notes
Plant in well-drained, organically rich soil and water regularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges; typical hosta-growing zones are suitable, though slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed as with other hostas.
