Overview
Registered in 2015, 'Valley's Red Scorpion' is a large, fast-growing variegated hosta of unknown parentage, both pod and pollen parents being Valley's seedlings. It is visually distinctive for its red scapes and petioles, with the red coloration extending prominently into the leaf veins and lower leaf surfaces, contrasting with medium green, slightly rippled leaves that are moderately twisted, deeply folded, and moderately wavy.
In the Garden
'Valley's Red Scorpion' forms an upright mound reaching approximately 27.5 inches (69.9 cm) in height and 35.4 inches (89.9 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical for variegated hostas, where its red petioles and veins are most visible. Its large, ovate leaves with rounded bases and seven vein pairs make it a substantial specimen for mid-border or woodland garden settings, pairing well with ferns or other shade perennials that do not compete for attention.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
