Overview
Registered in 2015 by breeder Valley, 'Valley's First Bite' is a large, mound-forming hosta notable for its intensely serrated leaf margins and white leaf undersides. The broadly ovate, variegated foliage displays light green margins, moderate twisting, and intense waviness, with a slightly shiny surface on both sides.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches approximately 55 cm (21.6 in) in diameter and 60 cm (23.6 in) in height, with scapes rising 80 to 90 cm (31.5–35.4 in). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its moderate growth rate makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen plant. The large, textured leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials that contrast with its bold form.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and protective measures are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
