Overview
Registered in 2015, *Hosta* 'Valley's Dandy' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'One Man's Treasure' and *H.* 'Maya Kingsnake'. Its most distinctive feature is the extreme dark purple coloration of the petioles, which extends into the leaf veins, contrasting with the medium green, very shiny leaf surfaces.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms an upright clump reaching approximately 20 inches (50 cm) in height and 20 inches (50 cm) in diameter at maturity, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the dark purple petiole coloration is most pronounced. The lightly wavy, ovate leaves with cordate bases and slightly rippled margins provide subtle textural interest, making it suitable for shaded borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in mixed containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrent measures are recommended, as with most hostas.
