Overview
Registered in 2008, *Hosta* 'Valley's Blue Buggle' is a small, upright cultivar derived from *H.* 'Kifukurin Ubatake' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. It is distinguished by its medium blue-green, ovate leaves with flat margins, dull surfaces on both sides, and a white leaf back that contrasts with the blue-green upper surface.
In the Garden
'Valley's Blue Buggle' reaches a mature diameter of approximately 10 inches (24.9 cm) and a height of 8 inches (20.1 cm), with scapes extending 8 to 12 inches (20.1–30.0 cm). Its compact size and upright habit suit it for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It pairs well with other small shade perennials such as heucheras, ferns, or miniature hostas. Moderate growth rate allows it to fill in without overwhelming neighboring plants.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; regular monitoring and appropriate barriers are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
