Overview
Registered in 2010, *Hosta* 'Valley's Blind River' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar derived from a cross between a seedling of *H.* 'One Man's Treasure' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Mikawa no Yuki' (pollen parent). Its most distinctive feature is the combination of dark green, very shiny leaves with slightly rippled margins and a dull underside, creating a pronounced contrast between leaf surfaces.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching approximately 20 inches (50 cm) in height and 24 inches (60 cm) in diameter. Individual leaves measure about 10 inches (25 cm) long and 6 inches (15 cm) wide, with 10 vein pairs and a broadly ovate shape with a flat base. The scapes rise 31 to 35 inches (80–90 cm) above the foliage and are green. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
