Overview

Registered in 1970 by M. Armstrong, this small hosta cultivar is a hybrid of *Hosta nakaiana*. It is visually distinctive for its medium green leaves with slight undulating margins and variegated coloration, reaching a mature diameter of 24 inches (61.0 cm) and height of 13 inches (33.0 cm).

In the Garden

‘Valentine Lace’ is best suited to partial to full shade, where its compact size and variegated foliage provide textural contrast in the front of borders or beneath deciduous trees. Its small stature (13 inches high, 24 inches wide) makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation or rock gardens. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small sedges complement its subdued green tones.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
