Overview

Registered in 2000, 'Upbeat' is a large, upright hosta cultivar derived from a hybrid of *Hosta fluctuans* seedling. Its most distinctive features are heavily rippled leaf margins and medium green variegated foliage with a pronounced sheen on the upper surface and a very shiny underside.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a substantial clump reaching 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter and 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, where its rippled leaves and contrasting sheen are most visible. The substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders, paired with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Upbeat' may require protection from slugs and snails, and deer browsing can be a concern in typical hosta-growing zones.
