Overview
Registered in 1986 by A. Summers and the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Unducosa' is a medium-sized hybrid resulting from a cross between *H. undulata* (pod parent) and *H. ventricosa* (pollen parent). The cultivar is distinguished by its variegated foliage: medium green leaves with undulated margins, each leaf measuring 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) in length and 6.25 inches (15.9 cm) in width, with eight pairs of veins.
In the Garden
'Hunducosa' performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and reaches a medium mature size with a clump spread of approximately 24 to 30 inches. Its undulated, variegated leaves provide textural contrast when planted alongside ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials. The scape height is recorded as 40 inches (101.6 cm), though the zero-inch lower value in the registry suggests possible variability or incomplete data; in practice, scapes typically rise well above the foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
