Overview

Registered in 2001 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, *Hosta* 'Ulysses S. Grant' is a giant blue-green cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its immense upright mound and heavily textured foliage. The leaves are ovate with cordate bases, dull-surfaced both above and below, and display moderate twisting, folding, waviness, and corrugation, with slightly rippled margins and 16 prominent vein pairs.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 65 inches (165.1 cm) and a height of 35 inches (88.9 cm), making it a commanding presence in the landscape. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green coloration holds well. Given its fast growth rate and upright habit, it functions effectively as a specimen plant or as a backdrop for smaller hostas and shade perennials such as ferns or astilbes. Its large size precludes container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the substantial foliage is attractive to both pests.
