Year registered2003
Section classIII-2

Overview

Registered in 2003, this medium-sized hosta cultivar was developed from a cross between *Hosta* 'Sea Lotus Leaf' and *Hosta kikutii* var. *leuconata*. 'Ultramarine' is distinguished by its intensely blue-green foliage, which carries a heavy glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces, giving the leaves a powdery, almost metallic appearance.

In the Garden

Mature plants form a symmetrical, fast-growing mound reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter. The ovate leaves with cordate bases measure 9 inches (22.9 cm) long by 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide, displaying flat margins and 11 to 13 pairs of veins. Blue-green scapes rise 24 to 36 inches (61.0 to 91.4 cm) above the foliage. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue coloration is most pronounced. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its cool blue tones.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most blue-leaved hostas, 'Ultramarine' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in typical hosta-growing zones.
