Overview
Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'T Rex' is a giant, mound-forming variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. montana macrophylla* and *H.* 'Big John'. It is distinguished by its exceptionally large leaves—up to 18 inches long and 14 inches wide—with medium green margins and a dull surface on both sides, borne on a plant that can reach 80 inches in diameter.
In the Garden
'T Rex' is best suited to partial to full shade, where its substantial foliage can develop without scorching. At maturity, it forms a massive mound 30 inches tall and over 6.5 feet wide, making it an effective specimen or background plant in large borders and woodland gardens. Its moderate growth rate means it will fill space gradually; companion plants should be chosen to complement its scale, such as ferns, *Rodgersia*, or other large-leaved perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slug and deer resistance is not absolute, the thick, heavy leaves are less appealing to slugs than those of many smaller hostas; standard precautions may still be warranted in high-pressure areas.
