Overview
Registered in 2002 by P. & J. Ruh, this large cultivar resulted from crossing *H.* 'Donahue Piecrust' with *H.* 'Heartleaf'. *Hosta* 'Swirling Hearts' is visually distinguished by its ovate, medium green leaves with heavily rippled margins, a moderately folded and lightly twisted blade, and a twisted pointed tip.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Swirling Hearts' forms a full clump reaching 47 inches (119.4 cm) in diameter and 23 inches (58.4 cm) in height, with an upright habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed borders alongside ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. The heavily textured leaves and prominent vein pairs provide visual interest even when not in flower.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the textured foliage may attract both pests.
