Overview
Registered in 1986 by F. Williams and C. Williams, this medium-sized variegated hosta resulted from a cross between *H. sieboldii* (pod parent) and *H. plantaginea* (pollen parent). 'Sweet Susan' is distinguished by its medium green leaf margins and upright scapes that reach 25 inches (63.5 cm) in height.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a symmetrical mound 18 inches (45.7 cm) tall and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade. Its medium green leaves with 8 vein pairs provide a neutral backdrop for companions such as ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials. The upright scapes, though variable in height, carry flowers that attract pollinators in typical hosta-growing zones.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor foliage regularly and use barriers or repellents as needed.
