Overview
Registered in 1998 by H. Sugita and P. Ruh, 'Swan Lake' is a large hosta cultivar derived from a cross between *Hosta kiyosumiensis* (pod parent) and *Hosta pycnophylla* (pollen parent). Its most distinctive features are the blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a glaucous bloom on the undersides, and a slight sheen on the upper surface.
In the Garden
'Swan Lake' forms a mound-like clump reaching approximately 47 inches (119.4 cm) in diameter and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It is best suited to partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size makes it appropriate for mid-border or as a specimen plant in woodland gardens, but it is not suitable for container cultivation due to its dimensions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slugs and deer, which may damage the foliage.
