Overview
Registered in 2005, this medium-sized cultivar resulted from a cross between a blue *Hosta sieboldiana* seedling and an open-pollinated seedling as pod parent, with *Hosta yingeri* as pollen parent. 'Swamp Thing' is visually distinctive for its highly glossy, medium green leaves with golden yellow margins and a pronounced sheen on both surfaces.
In the Garden
'Swamp Thing' forms a fast-growing, mound-like clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 45 inches (114.3 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, where the gold margins remain brightest. The substantial leaf size and vigorous growth rate make it suitable as a groundcover or accent in woodland borders, where its glossy foliage contrasts well with fine-textured ferns or broad-leaved companions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during establishment and throughout the growing season, as the large leaves require adequate water to maintain turgor. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage; monitor and manage as needed in damp conditions.
