Overview
Registered in 2009 by D. Lohman and M. Zilis, *Hosta* 'Suzy Q' is a large hybrid derived from *H. pycnophylla* as seed parent and *H. plantaginea* as pollen parent. The cultivar is distinguished by its substantial blue-green, ovate leaves with cordate bases, a glaucous bloom on the undersides, and large, fragrant purple flowers that appear in late summer.
In the Garden
'Huzy Q' forms a mound approximately 45 inches (114 cm) in diameter and 22 inches (56 cm) tall, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to light shade, typical of most hostas, and its large leaf size makes it suitable as a specimen or mid-border plant in woodland or shade gardens. The fragrant late-summer flowers, borne on scapes 35 to 39 inches (89 to 99 cm) tall, provide extended seasonal interest.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through standard cultural or barrier methods.
