Overview
Registered in 1986 by F. Williams and the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Surprise' is a small-sized cultivar of unknown parentage. Its distinguishing feature is a variegated leaf with a dark green margin, a central area of lighter coloration, and six pairs of veins per leaf.
In the Garden
'Hosta' forms a compact mound reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 33 inches (83.8 cm) in diameter, with individual leaves measuring 6.75 inches (17.1 cm) long by 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade and is well-suited for rock gardens, woodland borders, or container plantings due to its small stature. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small hostas that share similar light and moisture requirements.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
