Overview
Registered in 2007, 'Surfer Dude' is a hybrid between *Hosta rupifraga* (pod parent) and *Hosta plantaginea* (pollen parent). This medium-sized cultivar is distinguished by its intensely wavy, heavily rippled leaves with serrated margins, a glossy blue-green upper surface, and a glaucous bloom beneath.
In the Garden
'Surfer Dude' forms an upright, fast-growing clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter. Its thick, elliptic leaves with rounded bases and 9 to 10 vein pairs measure 10 inches (25.4 cm) long by 6.25 inches (15.9 cm) wide. The plant produces lax scapes 28 to 30 inches (71.1 to 76.2 cm) tall. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial size makes it unsuitable for containers.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, particularly during establishment. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves provide moderate resistance to slugs, though standard preventative measures may still be warranted in damp conditions.
