Overview
Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'Surf and Turf' is a large, upright variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between *H*. 'Dorothy Benedict' (pod parent) and *H*. 'Incredible Hunk' (pollen parent). The plant is distinguished by its medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a slightly shiny surface on both sides, and a cordate leaf base.
In the Garden
'Surf and Turf' reaches a mature diameter of 38 inches (96.5 cm) and a height of 21 inches (53.3 cm), with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its upright habit makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen plant. The large, variegated foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed.
