Overview
Registered in 1996, *Hosta* 'Supersonic' is a sport of the popular *H. 'Sum and Substance'*, distinguished by its giant size and green leaves with medium gold, slightly rippled margins. The foliage is very shiny on the upper surface and slightly shiny beneath, with cordate leaf bases and 12 to 14 vein pairs.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a large, mound-like clump reaching 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 30 inches (76.2 cm) tall, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders. The broad, gold-margined leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Supersonic' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
