Overview
Registered in 2000, *Hosta* 'Super Star' is a giant cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Dorothy Benedict' and *H.* 'Maekawa'. Its most distinctive feature is the combination of medium green leaves with heavy, rippled margins and a very shiny upper surface, contrasted by a glaucous bloom on the underside.
In the Garden
This upright, moderate-growing plant reaches 25 inches (63.5 cm) in height and 35 inches (88.9 cm) in diameter at maturity. Its large, cordate-based leaves—13.13 inches (33.4 cm) long and 9.25 inches (23.5 cm) wide with 15 vein pairs—make it a substantial specimen for the middle to back of a shaded border. The glaucous green scapes, 29 to 31 inches (73.7 to 78.7 cm) tall, carry flowers above the foliage. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials in typical hosta-growing zones.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs may damage the leaves, the heavy rippling and thick texture offer moderate resistance; deer browsing remains a potential concern.
