Overview

Registered in 1999 as a sport of an unnamed parent, *Hosta* 'Super Nova' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its large, cordate leaves with blue-green margins and golden yellow centers. The leaf blades reach 34.3 cm (13.5 in) in length and 22.9 cm (9 in) in width, bearing 16 to 18 vein pairs and a glaucous bloom on both surfaces.

In the Garden

This slow-growing cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 144.8 cm (57 in) in diameter and 61 cm (24 in) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the yellow centers maintain their brightness without scorching. The substantial foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its giant size makes it unsuitable for container culture.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Super Nova' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
