Overview
Registered in 2009 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Zany Janie', 'Sunlight and Shadows' is a large cultivar distinguished by its streaked green and yellow leaf coloration with narrow, green, slightly rippled margins. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) wide with 13 vein pairs, have a dull surface above and below and a cordate base. The scape, reaching up to 35 inches (88.9 cm), is green streaked with yellow.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound-like clump 14 inches (35.6 cm) high and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its variegation remains most stable. Its substantial size suits it for use as a specimen or in the middle to back of shaded borders, where it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in spring and early summer when leaves are expanding. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, monitor for slug damage on the dull leaf surfaces and protect from deer where these animals are present.
