Overview
Registered in 2004 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Gold Standard', 'Sunfish Stripe' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by a narrow white streak that appears between the green leaf margin and the gold leaf center. This white marking, approximately 0.25 to 0.5 inches (0.6–1.3 cm) wide, creates a three-color pattern absent in its parent.
In the Garden
'Gold Standard' grows to a mature mound 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter and 19 inches (48.3 cm) tall, with a fast growth rate. Its 8-inch-long (20.3 cm), ovate leaves with rounded bases and flat, lightly corrugated surfaces are dull on both top and underside. The plant performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the gold centers remain bright without scorching. Its medium size suits it for mid-border positions or as a groundcover under deciduous trees, paired with ferns or shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Sunfish Stripe' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, requiring protection in areas where these pests are prevalent.
