Overview
Registered in 2004 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Sunfish Blue' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its intensely blue-green foliage, which carries a glaucous bloom on both the upper and lower leaf surfaces. The leaves are broadly ovate with spear-like tips and cordate bases, measuring up to 17 inches long and 14 inches wide, with flat margins, moderate cupping, and light corrugation.
In the Garden
With a mature diameter of 48 inches and height of 35 inches, 'Sunfish Blue' forms a substantial upright clump suited to partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas. Its large, blue-green leaves provide strong textural contrast when paired with finer-textured shade perennials such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Carex*. The plant produces green scapes 48 to 50 inches tall, though the flowers are not its primary ornamental feature.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage can occur and may require management in garden settings.
