Overview
Registered in 2005 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sunset Strip', 'Sundowner' is a large, upright cultivar distinguished by its very shiny, blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on the undersides. The broadly ovate, moderately cupped and corrugated foliage is notably leathery and substantial, reaching 26.0 cm (10.25 in) in length and 19.1 cm (7.5 in) in width with 12 to 13 vein pairs.
In the Garden
'Sundowner' forms a substantial clump 86.4 cm (34 in) in diameter and 83.8 cm (33 in) tall, making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders and woodland gardens. Its moderate growth rate and upright habit allow it to pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The large, shiny leaves provide textural contrast against finer-foliaged companions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Sundowner' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones; protective measures may be necessary in areas with high pest pressure.
