Overview
Registered in 1990 by C. Soules, *Hosta* 'Sunami' is a large variegated cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H. montana*. It is distinguished by its glossy, medium green leaves with slight undulating margins, forming a substantial mound of 55 inches (139.7 cm) in diameter and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height.
In the Garden
'Sunami' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas of its size class. Its mature spread of nearly 4.5 feet makes it suitable as a specimen or mid-border accent in larger garden spaces. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad, glossy foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Sunami' is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may require protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
