Overview
Registered in 2004, 'Sun Chaser' is a giant hosta cultivar derived from a cross between a *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict' seedling (pod parent) and *Hosta hypoleuca* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its nearly round, deeply corrugated, moderately cupped leaves that are blue-green with gold margins, often showing unstable streaks of varying shades of yellow within the margin.
In the Garden
With a mature diameter of 31 inches (78.7 cm) and height of 23 inches (58.4 cm), 'Sun Chaser' is a substantial specimen suited to partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its upright, slow-growing habit and heavy, white-backed leaves make it a strong accent in the middle to back of a shaded border or woodland garden. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its bold, corrugated foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the large, textured leaves are attractive to both pests.
