Overview
Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Sun Catcher' is a small-sized hybrid derived from *H.* 'Ogon Tsushima' as the seed parent and *H. yingeri* as the pollen parent. The cultivar is visually distinctive for its elliptic leaves with bright yellow, slightly rippled margins that contrast with a green center, combined with a very shiny surface on both sides and dense purple flowers held on green scapes.
In the Garden
'Sun Catcher' forms a mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 29 inches (73.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its small size makes it appropriate for container cultivation or front-of-border placement.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are recommended, as both pests may damage the foliage.
