Overview
Registered in 2010 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance', 'Sumsational' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its large, nearly round leaves with golden yellow centers and unusually dark green, flat margins. The leaf blades measure 14 inches long by 11 inches wide, with 13 to 14 vein pairs, a dull upper surface, and a glaucous bloom beneath; the margin width ranges from 1 to 2 inches and is markedly darker than that of the related cultivar 'Sum and Subtle'.
In the Garden
'Sumsational' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 26 inches in height and 50 inches in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-green hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. The large, gold-centered leaves contrast effectively with darker foliage plants such as ferns or *Heuchera* cultivars.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate cultural or physical controls.
