Overview

Registered in 2012 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Summer Breeze', 'Summer Storm' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar distinguished by its dark green leaf centers with broad, irregular margins of light to medium green. The overall effect is a darker, stormier version of its parent, with the variegation appearing as flat, slightly shiny borders that contrast with the duller underside of the leaf.

In the Garden

'Summer Storm' forms a mound-like clump reaching approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 25 inches (63.5 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its broad, cordate-based leaves with eight vein pairs provide substantial textural interest. The green scapes, rising 16 to 18 inches (40.6 to 45.7 cm) above the foliage, bear lavender flowers in midsummer. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials, and its medium size suits border fronts or woodland garden settings.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Summer Storm' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
