Overview
Registered in 2007, 'Summer Squall' is a medium-sized hosta resulting from an F2 cross of a notably blue *Hosta sieboldiana* with *Hosta longipes*, combined with the cultivar 'One Man's Treasure'. The plant is distinguished by its intensely blue-green, deeply folded, ovate leaves with cordate bases, a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and flat margins.
In the Garden
'Summer Squall' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous foliage retains its color. The blue scapes, rising 32 to 34 inches (81.3 to 86.4 cm) tall, make it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen among ferns and shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. While slug and deer resistance is not absolute, the thick, glaucous leaves offer moderate deterrence in typical hosta-growing zones.
