Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Final Summation' registered in 2011, 'Sum Zero' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its upright, deeply cupped foliage of intense blue-green. The leaves are nearly rounded with cordate bases, bearing a glaucous bloom on both surfaces and dark green, slightly rippled margins.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of 38 inches (96.5 cm) and height of 24 inches (61.0 cm), 'Sum Zero' forms a substantial, upright clump suited to partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its large, cupped leaves and light corrugation provide textural contrast when paired with fine-textured ferns or broad-leaved companions such as *Heuchera* or *Astilbe*. The green scapes, reaching 30 to 36 inches (76.2 to 91.4 cm), carry pale lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Sum Zero' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage accordingly.
