Overview
Registered in 1991 by S. Pedrick, this giant sport produces substantial, dark green leaves with narrow chartreuse margins approximately 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) wide. The leaf surface is waxy, and the 15-inch (38.1 cm) long by 12-inch (30.5 cm) wide blades carry 18 vein pairs, giving the plant a bold, broad appearance.
In the Garden
Reaching 36 inches (91.4 cm) in height with a mature spread typical of giant hostas, 'Sum Total' performs best in partial to full shade. Its large, dark-centered leaves with lighter margins provide strong contrast in woodland borders or as a specimen plant. Pair with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that appreciate similar moisture levels.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
