Overview

Registered in 2005, *Hosta* 'Sum Streaker' is a sport of the popular *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' distinguished by its unusual variegation pattern: bright golden yellow leaves streaked with light green, greenish-yellow, and pale yellow, edged with creamy white, slightly rippled margins. The medium-sized mound reaches 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height and 23 inches (58.4 cm) in diameter, with ovate leaves measuring 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, featuring nine pairs of veins and a lightly cupped, twisted, and corrugated texture.

In the Garden

'Hosta 'Sum Streaker' performs best in partial to full shade, where its yellow-streaked foliage remains most vibrant; excessive sun may bleach the leaf centers. With a moderate growth rate, it forms a tidy, mound-like clump suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen in a woodland garden. Its compact dimensions make it appropriate for container culture, and it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its golden tones.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
