Overview
A sport of the widely grown *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance', 'Sum Piecrust' was registered in 1999 and is distinguished by its giant size and heavily rippled leaf margins. The foliage is blue-green, slightly shiny on the upper surface with a glaucous bloom beneath, and each leaf bears 14 to 15 pairs of veins on a cordate base.
In the Garden
'Sum Piecrust' reaches approximately 31 inches (79 cm) in diameter and 32 inches (81 cm) in height, with an upright, moderate growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial size makes it unsuitable for containers and best used as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Sum Piecrust' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate controls may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
