Overview
Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Sum of All' is a sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' distinguished by its giant size and blue-green leaves with notably wide golden yellow margins. The margins, approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, are substantially broader than those of similar cultivars, creating a bold contrast against the medium to dark green leaf centers.
In the Garden
'Sum of All' forms a large mound reaching 32 inches (81.3 cm) in height and 80 inches (203.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom on the leaf surfaces is best preserved. The substantial leaves, measuring 16 inches (40.6 cm) long and 12 inches (30.5 cm) wide, are broadly ovate with cordate bases, moderately wavy, and lightly corrugated. Its size makes it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders, paired with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials. Green scapes rise 30 to 48 inches (76.2 to 121.9 cm) above the foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur, particularly in moist conditions.
