Overview
Registered in 2009 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance', 'Sum and Subtle' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with broad, pale green margins that transition to a subtle chartreuse, surrounding a medium golden yellow center. The leaf surface is dull on top with a thin glaucous bloom beneath, and the nearly round, cordate-based blades are moderately wavy, measuring up to 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide with 13 to 14 vein pairs.
In the Garden
'Sum and Subtle' forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green foliage and gold margins remain most stable; excessive sun may cause leaf scorch or fade the center color. Its substantial size and bold texture pair well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials, though it is too large for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Sum and Subtle' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and protective measures are recommended in typical hosta-growing zones.
