Overview

Registered in 1988 by W. Zumbar, this small sport produces dark green leaves with light chartreuse to gold margins. The leaf blades measure 4 inches (10.2 cm) long by 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide, with six vein pairs, and form a compact mound 11 inches (27.9 cm) in diameter and 7 inches (17.8 cm) tall.

In the Garden

‘Sultana’ performs best in partial to dappled shade, where its gold margins hold color without scorching. Its small stature makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, or miniature epimediums that share similar light and moisture requirements.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, applying fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, ‘Sultana’ is susceptible to slug and deer damage, though its small, firm leaves are somewhat less appealing to slugs than larger, thinner cultivars.
