Year registered2011
Section classII-5b

Overview

Registered in 2011 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sweet Sunshine', this large cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump 22 inches (55.9 cm) tall and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter. Its most distinctive features are the nearly rounded, heavily cupped and puckered leaves with dark green centers and flat golden yellow margins 0.5 to 0.625 inches (1.3 to 1.6 cm) wide, combined with fragrant flowers on green scapes 28 to 30 inches (71.1 to 76.2 cm) tall.

In the Garden

'Sugar Snap' performs best in partial to dappled shade, where its gold margins maintain good color without scorching. The mature clump reaches a substantial spread of 4 feet, making it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border. Its moderate growth rate and bold, textured foliage pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its rounded leaf form.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the thick, puckered leaves are not particularly resistant to either pest.
