Overview
Registered in 2011, *Hosta* 'Sugar Plum' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from an unnamed seedling pollinated by *H. 'One Man's Treasure'. It is visually distinctive for its upright habit, rich purple petioles that extend purple coloration into the leaf veins, and the strong contrast between blue-green, slightly shiny leaf tops and very white, waxy glaucous leaf undersides.
In the Garden
'Sugar Plum' forms a clump 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter and 20 inches (50.8 cm) tall, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-green hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials. Its medium size and upright form make it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods; apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hostas, though the waxy leaf coating may provide some resistance.
