Overview
Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Subtlety' is a sport of *Hosta* 'Little Aurora' distinguished by its small stature and subtle variegation of light green centers with golden yellow margins. The cultivar's name reflects its understated coloration, where the pale green center transitions gently into the brighter marginal band.
In the Garden
As a small hosta, 'Subtlety' reaches a mature size of approximately 6 to 8 inches in height and 12 to 15 inches in spread, making it suitable for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade with consistent moisture, and pairs well with other small woodland perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes. Its compact habit also makes it an excellent choice for trough gardens or small-scale shade compositions.
Care Notes
Provide regular water during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Subtlety' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate preventive measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
