Overview
Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'Subterranean Pool' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a cross between *H.* 'Urajiro Hachijo' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Blue Clown' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green, heavily rippled leaf margins and the presence of a glaucous bloom on both the upper and lower leaf surfaces.
In the Garden
'Subterranean Pool' forms a mound-like clump reaching 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for the middle of a border or as a specimen in a shaded bed.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed.
